Military Website Premiere and Reception

The 2012 Newhouse military classes will premiere their website on Thursday, May 10th. This is the day the students graduate the program. I’d like to invite anyone who has the time to come to room 141 (Halmi) at 1500 (that’s 3:00 PM for you civilians) to see what the students have created under the guidance of Ken Harper and Deb Pang Davis. The content for the site was created in classes with David Sutherland, Simon Perez, Sherri Taylor, Tom Kennedy and Emily Kulkus, with back up from John Nicholson, Dona Hayes, Doug Quin and Dick Breyer. The military students will be in their uniforms (so distinguished looking—you might not recognize them).

If you can’t make that time, please stop by the lobby of Newhouse I at 1600 (4:00 PM) for a glass of wine or a snack and view the MPJ portfolio prints in the display cases. Let our military students, their families and commanding officers know that we care about the work they do. Please come to shake their hand and wish them well.

Hope to see you there,
Nancy

Max McCombs attends Shoemaker’s COM 807: Content Analysis class

Shoemaker’s COM 807 Content Analysis class thank Professor Emeritus Maxwell McCombs for the Q&A session with him this morning.  McCombs former Snow Chair and colleague of Pam Shoemaker current John Ben Snow Professor was visiting Newhouse today and speaking to doctoral students and faculty.  He is world renowned and most famous for his Agenda Setting Theory.  Shoemaker has known McCombs since the 1980s when he left Newhouse to Chair the Department of Journalism at the University of Texas.  They worked together for several years and McCombs was very helpful to her own research.  A little known fact:  Pam introduced Max to his wife Betsy.

Funk Cancer

The “Funk Cancer” benefit concert featuring Stephen Babcock and the band Good Neighbors raised $700 last Saturday night for Paige’s Butterfly Run, a charity that raises money for the Pediatric Oncology unit at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital.

The concert was a production of the staff of OTN and was a stellar example of Scholarship in Action, connecting the students on the hill to the community of Syracuse.

Promotion through social media, flyers, the Daily Orange and word of mouth resulted in a standing room only crowd. Raffle items included a signed basketball by Jim Boeheim and a poster of this year’s basketball team signed by all the team.
